Nice one Rich, apart from the setlist sounds like it was worth the while seeing them. I hope the same band turns up tommorrow. Not going to go with high expectations or I might end up walking out half way through. _________________

Holy omg, Pain were fantastic. I need to buy cds, now.
As for Nightwish... it varied. It started off well, until they hit "Whoever Brings The Night" which is a song that I detest with such passion that I have it as my alarm in the mornings so I am forced to get up and turn it off as it's that bad. "Dead to the World" was a highlight, but I felt "Nemo" "Dark Chest of Wonders" and "The Siren" were not great. The bagpipe player was the ultimate best moment, seriously. "The Poet and the Pendulum" was over-drawn and I felt it was a bit over the top, and for Tuomas to mime slitting his throat each time (he does it every time) while at the same time protesting that it's a very personal song seemed pretty pretentious.
The thing that annoyed me the most is that 99% of the smiles and the same-old same-old stage antics were all directed at the cameras. Most of them left after the 2-3 songs they normally have, but a couple were there all night. Since we were the audience, it would've been nice to sometimes look past the damn cameras.
Also, the person behind me was tone deaf and sang loudly in my ear, for every song. He also wanted to get my spot at the front, and used pushing, shoving, kicking and crushing my ribs from both sides so I could hardly breathe as tactics.
Altogether, it would've been fun if I hadn't had to include the whiny paragraph there, but now I just don't feel like all the pain I am feeling now was worth it. Nightwish are ok, they're fun, but they're not my Nightwish any more. I doubt I'll ever be able to get past that.
Also, I've found out that on the first night some of my friends were holding up signs with the alternative lyrics to Wishmaster on signs, and Erin (who made that video) came along to see us in the queue and got her photo taken with their signs saying "Hard Porn" and "Fishmaster." That was fun! |

At least you enjoyed Pain (Not literally of course lol). Glad everyone so far seems to be taking to them. They've been around for years but never made themselves known in the UK really, so it's nice to see the good reception.

Someone gets it very wrong on a last.fm review:
| Quote: | | They were an okay "warmup" (their words, not mine), for Nightwish, but not the best. Shoulda got Alestorm =D. |

I was there Thursday night, and oh em gee, the gis was fantastic. Now I understand what people mean when they say that the band are now happier than ever, and it really shows on stage. Anette is a fireball of energy, she knows how to work the crowd and how to have fun on stage.
I loved her vocals, including the old hits. Surprisingly, there wasn't a single moment when I'd think of Tarja, I completely forgot about her! Siren, Dark Chest of Wonders and Sacrament of Wilderness were spot on!
Now some pics from my crappy old camera :

Anette
And finally...

It was a really good gig! I'd have to disagree with Wildespace and say that for me, personally, I did miss Tarja. Not as much as I expected to by any length but I didn't like her version of Sacrament of Wilderness or The Siren. But then again, you can't expect to like everything done by a new singer to old music, such is the way of life. I didn't mind her covers of Nemo, Wish I had an Angel or Dark Chest of Wonders.
Hearing their new music was eye opening (as I hoped it would be), considering I really hadn't listened much to DPP I just wasn't won over by it, but live it was awesome. I will say overall the band didn't live up to when I saw them at the Astoria in 2005 (which for me was pinnacle of my obsession and the most magic night ever) but there was a new energy that Anette had obviously introduced. The band dynamics were better and she really was rather good.
Oh and they totally played 7 days to the wolves for us (my friends, aka the people who held the fishmaster signs on the 1st day had signs requesting 7 days which was epic)
And then afterwards we met the band (except for Emppu) at the back of the Astoria and they were all really lovely, especially Anette and Jukka who I've always been told is a really lovely guy, and he was. He stuck around talking to for ages and had to be told several times to go get in his taxi. Tuomas was more distant but was epic to meet him, and Marco also. I wish I'd taken something for them to sign, but c'est la vie no doubt they'll have a signing session at BOA anyway.
I'll write up a proper review on my el jay at some point with photos, but for now (if this works..? ok no workie so links...) some video clips.

I might be able to shed a bit more light on this for you Rich..(if anyone is indeed interested... )
the 'chappy' was Troy Donockley and his 'panpipe thing' are called Uillean Pipes. He's a bit of a legend around the progressive/ celtic circuit, and has played with a lot of celtic rock bands at one time or another...
...for a while, he was in 'Iona', whose 2000 album Open Sky was a highlight...I saw them headline a festival in support of this album, with TD on stage for a 2 hour set. I have to be honest, I really thought it wouldn't be my cuppa, but they were incredibly good.
OK, its not metal, but its by no means lightweight either...incredibly impressive atmospheric, celtic rock soundscapes with twin keyboards, while Donockley plays harmonium, bouzouki, mandola, guitars and whistles, besides his pipes....
anyway, for those who enjoyed the 'folky' section of the NW gig, you might be interested in checking out the above as a slight musical diversion... _________________ www.myspace.com/fandangoinprogression

with reference to the gig itself, Rich's review is a very good one, and I agree with much of what he said...
there is no doubt that NW are going through a 'new romance' with Anette, with bags of enthusiasm, affection and enjoyment onstage. To be fair, she's obviously loving it, and knows how to work an audience, which clearly showed in the reception she got at Brum.
Like many people, I thought the DPP material stood up well live (although I personally don't find it the most interesting NW album on CD), and her vocal style is so radically different, that on occasions it took me up to a minute to recall a Tarja track ( )...but then that was always to be expected. I was in all, pleasantly surprised, and look forward to seeing them again sometime.
However, I have to be honest, I didn't really enjoy Pain...I tried, but they weren't my cuppa (do I get booted off the forum, now?? ). I won't knock them, because they clearly went down very well with the audience who gave them a lot of love, and lived up to their responsibility of warming up the crowd...
...on a final note, the set list (I think...) was identical to Rich's...except we also got 7 days to the Wolves as the opening track of the encore... _________________ www.myspace.com/fandangoinprogression

He also plays on some Mostly Autumn albums.
And yeah, the best bit (by far, but evidently I'm the only one of this opinion) |
